“Alternate Page with Proper Canonical Tag”: Is It an SEO Error?

Often this status is evidence that canonicalisation is working. The question is whether the selected preferred URL is the one you intended.

AWKNOWLEDGE / 18

Often this status is evidence that canonicalisation is working. The question is whether the selected preferred URL is the one you intended.

01. What Google is communicating

When very similar or duplicate URLs exist, Google generally selects one representative URL for the index. An alternate page with a proper canonical tag is normally the version not selected, with a canonical pointing toward the preferred page.

Examples include different URL variants, parameterised versions, or a duplicate page retained for a valid user reason. You do not need Google to index every alternate copy.

02. When the report deserves attention

Investigate if a page with genuinely different content incorrectly points to another URL, or if the canonical destination is broken, irrelevant or non-indexable. Also review whether sitemap and internal links keep promoting a duplicate that should have been redirected.

An independent service page should ordinarily have a self-referencing canonical. But simply adding that tag does not force Google to index a low-value or substantially overlapping page.

03. Choose one URL convention

Decide whether the preferred domain uses www or non-www, enforce HTTPS and ensure internal links and the sitemap use the same preferred versions. Permanent redirects can consolidate old URL variants after a migration.

Avoid mixing different canonical instructions between redirects, HTTP headers, HTML tags and sitemaps. Strong, consistent signals are easier for browsers, users and search engines to interpret.

04. Do not confuse consolidation with exclusion

Canonicalisation is meant to select a representative among equivalent or substantially similar URLs. It should not be used to hide important independent pages. Conversely, separate pages for one keyword spelling variation often do not deserve separate canonical status.

At Archeet Webtech, we plan page purpose and URL architecture together so that canonical rules support genuine content distinctions rather than trying to manufacture them after publication.

Practical checklist

  • Inspect user-declared and Google-selected canonicals.
  • Confirm independent pages point to themselves when appropriate.
  • Redirect truly retired URL variants to relevant destinations.
  • Keep sitemap and navigation aligned to preferred URLs.
  • Do not use robots.txt blocking as a canonicalisation method.

The useful takeaway

This status is usually normal for intentional duplicates. Fix it only when the URL relationship is wrong or a genuinely independent page has been treated as an alternate.

Apply this to your business

Identify the specific page, customer question or site signal involved. Verify current search-engine guidance and use actual site data before changing a live website. Search visibility and indexing are not guaranteed outcomes.
