Website Redesign SEO Checklist: Protect Rankings During Migration

A redesign is the right time to improve structure and quality, but a careless URL move can discard useful links and search history.

A redesign is the right time to improve structure and quality, but a careless URL move can discard useful links and search history.

01. Create a complete inventory before rebuilding

Record the current URL list, key organic landing pages, important external backlinks and pages that attract enquiries. Include older service pages even if their visual design is outdated; they may still have useful internal or external references.

Decide which pages remain, which merge and which retire. This is a business and content decision as much as a technical one.

02. Map every relevant old URL

An old page should redirect permanently to the closest meaningful new page when the content has moved. Sending all historical URLs to the homepage makes it harder for people to find the information they expected.

Update navigation and internal links to point directly to final URLs, avoiding unnecessary redirect hops. Keep one stable host and HTTPS convention.

03. Verify the new site before launch

Test page titles, headings, canonical links, response codes, robots settings, sitemap entries, navigation on small screens and accessibility of essential content. Make sure staging pages do not remain public and indexable.

Check contact actions and email links as carefully as SEO. A fast, attractive site that cannot be used by a prospective customer has not achieved its purpose.

04. Monitor after the DNS or hosting change

After release, use URL Inspection and server testing to confirm that the pages respond correctly. Review the Search Console indexing report and organic landing pages. Some movement may reflect reprocessing rather than a permanent loss.

Maintain a migration log so future problems can be traced to an actual change. Archeet Webtech’s redesign SEO work emphasises preservation and verification, not simply replacing page templates.

Practical checklist

  • Inventory legacy URLs and organic landing pages.
  • Use one-to-one relevant 301 redirect mappings.
  • Check canonical tags, sitemap and internal links together.
  • Test responsive navigation, email links and server responses.
  • Monitor Search Console and actual enquiries after launch.

The useful takeaway

A good migration preserves useful old URLs through relevant redirects, introduces clearer new pages and checks every technical signal after deployment.

Apply this to your business

Identify the specific page, customer question or site signal involved. Verify current search-engine guidance and use actual site data before changing a live website. Search visibility and indexing are not guaranteed outcomes.
